Woman claims a human finger was found in her Subway sandwich
Filed under Weird

Subway Shop

Health officials are investigating a woman’s claim that she found part of a human finger in a Subway sandwich - an allegation reminiscent of the chili bowl finger hoax that hit a Wendy’s restaurant last year.

Two health inspectors visited the Subway restaurant in Chowchilla on Thursday after the woman reported finding what appeared to be a half-inch piece of a finger a day earlier, said Jill Yaeger, director of the Madera County Environmental Health Department.

The inspectors did not find any evidence that a restaurant worker had lost part of a finger, but the purported human digit was sent to a laboratory for testing, she said.

The Subway manager, Anita Munoz, said she was in the restaurant when the woman returned with what she claimed looked like a finger.

“It looked like a thick piece of fat,” she told The Fresno Bee. “It doesn’t look anything human to me.”

Subway spokesman Kevin Kane said the company was aware of the woman’s claim but would not comment until Madera County officials completed their investigation.

“The Subway restaurant chain takes every customer comment seriously,” Kane said Friday. “We don’t know what the foreign object is yet.”

Chowchilla is about 90 miles east of San Jose, where a Las Vegas woman claimed in March 2005 that she bit into a fingertip in a bowl of chili at a Wendy’s restaurant. Anna Ayala’s stomach-turning claim made headlines around the world.

The claim was found to be a hoax and Ayala was sentenced to nine years in prison. Her husband was sentenced to more than 12 years for getting the finger from a co-worker who lost it in a workplace accident.

Wendy’s, based in Dublin, Ohio, said it lost $2.5 million in sales because of bad publicity and had to lay off dozens of employees at its Northern California franchises.

Since I’ve started having a Subway sandwich (nearly) every lunch break, I don’t think this will stop me from being a fan. Subway should have charged the woman for the additional meat.

Weed that soldiers can’t even get through
Filed under Others, Weird

Big Spliff

Canadian troops fighting Taliban militants in Afghanistan have stumbled across an unexpected and potent enemy — almost impenetrable forests of marijuana plants 10 feet tall.

General Rick Hillier, chief of the Canadian defense staff, said Thursday that Taliban fighters were using the forests as cover. In response, the crew of at least one armored car had camouflaged their vehicle with marijuana.

“The challenge is that marijuana plants absorb energy, heat very readily. It’s very difficult to penetrate with thermal devices. … And as a result you really have to be careful that the Taliban don’t dodge in and out of those marijuana forests,” he said in a speech in Ottawa, Canada.

“We tried burning them with white phosphorous — it didn’t work. We tried burning them with diesel — it didn’t work. The plants are so full of water right now … that we simply couldn’t burn them,” he said.

Even successful incineration had its drawbacks.

“A couple of brown plants on the edges of some of those [forests] did catch on fire. But a section of soldiers that was downwind from that had some ill effects and decided that was probably not the right course of action,” Hiller said dryly.

One soldier told him later: “Sir, three years ago before I joined the army, I never thought I’d say ‘That damn marijuana’.”

Damn, so how are they going to cut that down and smoke it? That’s some hard stuff.

Google Buys YouTube for US$1.65B

Soon enough, Google really is going to control all information on the Internet. $1.65B also doesn’t seem that much in comparison to other business buyouts, takeovers and purchases.

Google, the Internet’s leading search engine, announced Monday that it is buying popular online video site YouTube for $1.65 billion in stock.

YouTube, which was founded in February 2005, has quickly become the most well-known of several online video sites. More than 100 million videos, many of which are short videos created by the site’s users, are downloaded a day on the site.

According to Internet research firm Hitwise, YouTube has about a 46 percent share of the online video market.

For Google (Charts), the purchase of YouTube gives the company the ability to tap into the potentially lucrative online video and social networking markets. Some analysts have criticized Google for relying too much on advertising tied to keyword searches.

The combination of Google and YouTube could further strengthen Google’s dominance in online advertising, giving it an edge over rivals such as Yahoo!, Microsoft’s MSN and News Corp., which owns the social networking site MySpace. Some analysts said Monday that Yahoo, Microsoft and News Corp. also had probably expressed interest in buying YouTube.

In a statement, Google said that YouTube will operate as an independent unit of Google once the deal closes and will retain the YouTube brand name. The companies added that no YouTube workers will lose their jobs as a result of the acquisition and that Google will maintain its own online video business.
